HILLSBOROUGH, N.C. -

A Chapel Hill teen died Thursday after crashing on New Sharon Church Road in Hillsborough.

David Mayse, 19, skidded off the road and crashed, according to witnesses. His cousin, Dustin Ellis, was driving in front of Mayse when it happened. Ellis said Mayse had passed a vehicle on the wet roads before he was killed in his Chevy Cavalier.

Ellis said they were on the way to Ellis' house to get items to practice basketball.

Cammie Fielding, who was teaching students at her horse farm, Pleasant Hill Farm, where it happened, said the car was wrapped around a tree and broken in two pieces.

Fielding said the collision sounded like an explosion.

"It was almost the worst thing I've ever seen in my life. It was really upsetting for a lot of my kids, too," Fiedling said. "I had a barn full of students that I teach that were very distraught and upset after the whole thing because they saw it, they heard it."

Fielding and Ellis said Mayse, who attended Mount Hermon Baptist Church, died at the scene.

Mayse graduated from the Partnership Academy earlier this year – and received the Principal's Award.
