UPDATE: October 13th

Tennessee Highway Patrol reports 70-year-old Clarence D. Hawk, of Mountain City, died in an accident on Highway 421 South, in Johnson County. The preliminary crash report details that Hawk's vehicle ran off the right side of the roadway, and traveled 75 feet down an embankment. The 2002 Mercury Sable overturned, and came to rest against a tree, crushing the top of the car.

According to the report, drinking may have been a factor. He was wearing a seatbelt.

There were no citations issued, and no criminal charges are pending.

A section of Highway 421 in Johnson County is closed after a fatal car crash Friday night.

According to the Tennessee Highway Patrol, it happened around 8:25 p.m. near Shady Valley.

A THP dispatcher said early reports indicated a car ran off the side of the mountain road killing the driver.

No information was available on the victim, what caused the crash, or when the road would re-open.
