FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. -

Two men have been charged with assault after a Fayetteville man was struck with an exercise weight Saturday at his home.

Alphonso Swindell Carlton, 26, was arrested and charged with assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill, inflicting serious injury. He is being held at the Cumberland County Detention Center under a $125,000 secured bond.

Additionally, 26-year-old Jonathan Jackson is charged with assault inflicting serious bodily injury. He is being held at the Cumberland County Detention Center.

Officers were dispatched to the home in the 7000 block of Southgate Road in response to an assault around 2:05 p.m. Saturday.

Fayetteville Police say Carlton came to the home and became involved in an argument with Kendall Evans, 28, who was subsequently assaulted with an exercise weight.

Carlton fled the scene, police said, and another resident of the home found Evans outside of the residence and called for help.

Evans was immediately transported to Cape Fear Valley Medical Center and then airlifted to UNC Hospital in Chapel Hill, where he is listed in critical condition.

It was not immediately clear how Jackson was involved in the assault.
