New Details: Abductor kills self after Pactolus abduction

Posted: Updated:
PACTOLUS, N.C. -

There are new details about a kidnapping that ended with a suicide.

Pitt County deputies say 22-year-old Brandi Baggett is lucky to be alive after her ex-boyfriend kidnapped her and held her captive for eight hours.

Deputies spent hours searching for 27-year-old Paul Ireland, who they say had a history of domestic violence.

At around 7:30 Monday morning they say Ireland took Baggett from her Pactolus home and drove up to his hometown in Northhampton County.

Deputies say after several phone calls with the victim, Ireland let Baggett go and killed himself.

"Paul Ireland had a choice. Paul Ireland had the choice of whether to turn himself in for outstanding warrants or flee. Everything that occurred was because of Paul Ireland,” said Det. John Guard, Pitt County Sheriff's Office. “Brandi was a victim in this case. She was and will continue to be a victim in this case. It didn't just end yesterday."

Because of tips, the news media and efforts of many agencies including the U.S. Marshal's Office, deputies say Baggett is safe.

The search for a man who kidnapped his ex-girlfriend is over.

Monday evening, deputies say Paul Ireland shot and killed himself. Deputies tell 9 On Your Side Ireland was inside a Northampton County home and when they went to approach the home they heard a gunshot. When they got inside they found the body of 27- year-old Ireland.  It’s an end to a day-long kidnapping investigation.

Deputies say it all started around 7:30a.m., on Cattail Court in Pactolus, when neighbors heard screaming.

“It sounded like somebody was yelling, but I was scared, so I just got in the car, locked the doors, and left," said Kayla Manning.

A couple hours later when 22-year-old Brandi Kayla Baggett didn’t show up for work, the Sheriff’s Office was contacted and began an investigation.  Investigators spent eight hours trying to locate Baggett and Ireland.

Sheriff Neil Elks says a friend was able to get in contact with Baggett and get law enforcement’s number to her.

"I spoke to her personally around 1:30 and we come to an agreement that we would all meet back here in Pitt County and Greenville and talk about it. She was able to get back to this way through a family member. [We] are still trying to find out what happened in the last eight hours, from there we'll see where the investigation goes," said Elks.

Elks says the 22-year-old was returned to Pitt County physically unharmed around 4 p.m.

Deputies tell 9 On Your Side, Baggett and Ireland were going through a domestic dispute. Last week Ireland was arrested and charged with assaulting Baggett and threatening her. Ireland’s warrant says that he threatened to punch Baggett in the face if she lied to him.

Ireland was released from jail with a high bond, so he wouldn't’t have to wear an electronic monitoring device.

Neighbors tell 9 On Your Side that they noticed what looked to be Ireland’s car near the home this weekend and this morning.

Neighbor’s say they are glad Baggett is ok.

“That’s great that they found her, and it only took a day to find her. Some people get missing and they don't get found," said Kenneth Edmon.
