Riverwalk chase ends in arrest

Posted: Updated:
COLUMBUS, Ga. -

A shoplifter has been arrested after he lead police on a foot chase down the Riverwalk Thursday afternoon, WRBL News 3 media partner The Ledger-Enquirer reports.

Around 11:30 a.m. et, Phenix City police responded to Walmart because of a reported robber, the newspaper reports. The suspect then lead police on a vehicle chase.

The man eventually abandoned his vehicle on the Alabama side of the Chattahoochee River near 14th Street, a witness tells WRBL. The man then ran across the newly opened 14th Street Pedestrian Bridge before heading down the Riverwalk. Columbus Police continued the police pursuit before the man was apprehended near TSYS.

The witness who talked with WRBL News 3 provided photographs he took with his cell phone. The witness, who did not wish to be identified, says he took a photo of the man running from police. WRBL has not been able to independently identify the man in the photo.

Calls to the Columbus and Phenix City police departments have not yet been returned.
