BEAUFORT, N.C. -

In Carteret County, more than a dozen sea turtles madetheir way back to the water as they found a new home in the ocean.

On Thursday the North Carolina Aquarium at Pine KnollShores released 18 loggerhead sea turtles near the Gulf Stream, about 36 milesfrom shore.

The turtles were anywhere from a few weeks old to fiveyears old.

Volunteers rescued the turtles after they struggled toleave the nest or were found injured.

The aquarium took them in and nursed them back to healthuntil they were strong enough to make it out on their own.

"Everyone was very, very excited and pumped to be able toget the animals out. It's neat to watch the process of them being a hatchlingthat was on the verge of dying to being able to rehabilitate," said MicheleLamping, aquarist at the aquarium.

The aquarium released three turtles back in June andanother in October from Fort Macon.
