World Health Organization declares air pollution carcinogen

Posted: Updated:

Badly polluted air can cause cancer.

That's the conclusion reached by the World Health Organization.

Thursday at a conference in Switzerland, the W.H.O. added air pollution to its list of recognized carcinogens.

W.H.O. researchers say the more people are exposed to tiny particles in the air, the higher their risk of developing lung and bladder cancers.

It's estimated pollution led to more than 220,000 lung cancer deaths worldwide in 2010.
