A 7-year-old dachshund has lost more than 50 pounds in under a year.

Obie, as he is called, was the pet of an aging elderly couple in Washington State. Suffering from failing health, the couple could no longer give Obie the proper exercise needed and did not want to deny him any food.

Over time Obie gained more than twice his normal body weight. A standard dachshund is expected to weigh between 20-30 pounds, but Obie swelled to more than 77 pounds.

Fighting back tears, the owners relinquished Obie to a relative who brought him to Portland, OR where he was given to Nora Vanatta, a dog rescuer.

At the time, he was so large he could barely walk. Often time his stomach would drag on the ground, making it even more difficult for him to move. His weight even prevented him from being able to lick his paws.

A Facebook page called the Obie Dog Journey was started, chronicling the efforts to restore Obie to a healthy lifestyle.

For much of the past year, Vanatta worked to with Obie to shed the weight using a combination of swim therapy, treadmill work and a new low-calorie diet.

In April Obie underwent surgery to remove excess skin resulting from the massive amount of weight lost. In all, 2.5 pounds of excess skin were removed from him. Days later he up walking in the woods and has not slowed down since.

Donations are being accepted for Obie’s ongoing care and needs. Money raised will go towards The Retirement Home For Senior Wieners in Jacksonville, Fla.

In October, it was announced that Obie is going on tour in his godmother’s motor home to help the retirement dog home. Obie’s handlers say he’ll be in Jacksonville in November.
