FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. -
The father of a toddler who died after accidentally shooting herself Saturday has been charged in the child's death.
Melvin Andre Clark Jr., 19, is charged with involuntary manslaughter and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon in connection with the death of his 2-year-old daughter, Samarri Tyana Beauford.
Fayetteville Police say Clark left a loaded .22 semi-automatic pistol under the living room couch, which Beauford subsequently found and accidentally discharged.
Investigators said the girl was not breathing when they first responded to the home 2600 block of Graham Road Saturday afternoon. She was transported immediately to Cape Fear Valley Medical Center and police believe EMS performed CPR on the way in attempts to save her.
"The child sustained the injuries due to an unsecured handgun in the residence. We have obtained that handgun," said Cpt. Charles Hunter with the Fayetteville Police Department.
She was pronounced dead at the hospital, authorities said.
Clark is being held at the Cumberland County Detention Center on a $50,000 secured bond.
