RALEIGH, N.C. -

The State Fair is all fun and games, until someone goes missing.

More than 70 children have been lost by parents at the fair since opening day; luckily, though, all have been reunited, deputies say.

It's a scary reality when 100,000 people attend such an event on its busiest days.

"You are shoulder to shoulder with people, you have three small children, it is easy to get bumped, you turn around and they are just gone," said Chip Hawley, with the Wake County Sheriffs Office.

He has a huge detail of deputies, assisted by the Highway Patrol, all assisted by a network of security cameras to quickly spot missing children and make sure they don't leave the gates.

"It is extremely easy [to lose a child]," Hawley said.

Deputies recommend parents put identifying information in their child's pocket, such as a name and phone number, so authorities can identify them when found.

When a child is lost, she is brought to the Kiddy Colony at the Expo Center, where a page is made with a description of the child or the child's name. Or they will page a parent if the child can identify their parent.

Deputies and officers are notified over the radio immediately.

Vendors provide stuffed animals and candy to comfort the children while they wait to be reunited.
