DUNN, N.C. -

An AR-15 was stolen from the Dunn home of Rep. Renee Ellmers, police reports confirmed.

Several items were stolen from the home Oct. 16, including the AR-15. The AR-15 is a semi-automatic carbine based on the M-16 carried by American soldiers.

Ellmers' press secretary, Tom Doheny, said the weapon was not locked in a gun safe at the time.

According to police documents, her husband, Brent Ellmers, noticed a closet door was open in his garage around 8:40 a.m. There were also items tossed on the floor in the area.

Brent Ellmers said their son had gone target shooting the day before and had left the AR-15 leaning against the gun safe. No firearms from the gun safe were taken, the police report said.

Ellmers' husband admitted to leaving vehicles and garage entry door unlocked during the overnight hours, according to the police report.

Ellmers, a Republican, represents North Carolina's Second District.
