Man who reported townhouse break-in faces charges

Posted: Updated:
GREENVILLE, N.C. - A man who barricaded himself in a Winterville townhouse earlier this week is now facing charges.

Police say 31-year-old Matthew Sanders called 911 Wednesday afternoon and said an intruder might be in his home. Greenville Police responded and shut down Thomas Langston Road as they investigated.

Sanders had locked himself in an upstairs bedroom and firefighters used a ladder to pull him out. Police never found any suspects.

In a GPD report released Thursday, Sanders is charged with discharging a firearm in city limits and filing a false police report.

Police responded swiftly Wednesday afternoon after they received a call about a reported break-in underway at a Greenville townhouse.

It happened at the Legends Townhomes complex near Lowe's Home Improvement off of Thomas Langston Rd. The busy roadway was shut down for several hours as the situation played itself out.

Officers say the male victim, who has not been identified, locked himself in an upstairs room with a gun and his dog while he called police. He was later pulled out of a bedroom window by ladder.

Officers have cleared the townhouse. At this time, they don't have anyone in custody. There's no word on the suspect's description or if a break-in actually happened.

Sgt. Joe Friday with Greenville Police tells 9 On Your Side that he doesn't believe there is any threat to Ridgewood Elementary School. Officials with Pitt County Schools say the children were brought inside as a safety precaution.

Investigation into the incident is still underway. The victim voluntarily went to the Greenville Police Department for further questioning.
