An inmate serving a life sentence for first-degree murder has been found dead inside a high-security North Carolina prison.
A brief statement issued by the N.C. Department of Public Safety says the body of Ronald L. Goodman III was found inside Scotland Correctional Institution. The statement said the 32-year-old inmate died of an apparent suicide.
The Scotland County Sheriff's Department is investigating the death. Goodman's body was sent to the State Medical Examiner's Office for an autopsy.
Goodman was convicted in the April 2000 shooting of 30-year-old Kenneth Highsmith after the two had argued over drugs.
The Robesonian of Lumberton reported Monday that Scotland County Sheriff Shep Jones says Goodman was found hanging in the prison canteen, where he worked. He had recently been denied parole.
