Columbus BRIDGE celebrates 20 years of GED classes

Posted: Updated:
COLUMBUS, Ga. -

It's been twenty years since Columbus B.R.I.D.G.E. graduated its first class of GED recipients. The nonprofit group looks to help high schools drop outs get in to college and in to the work force.

"We found there really was an under served population in the community," program director Willie A. Coleman says about the problem's founding in 1993. "And that was kids between 18 and 24."

Individuals within that age group can apply to the program. Tytianna Grant graduated from the program just a week ago.

"Now that I have my GED I feel there are endless possibilities," she says. The mother of two hopes to run her own saloon. "I want my kids to have a good education as well and so I want to be that role model for them and not have them to look up to nobody else."

Graduate Katina Toney also has her eyes set on the future.

"My mom went to get go get some Samaritan funds and I had never heard about the BRIDGE program," she recalls. "So I saw the sign and went over and asked questions. They welcomed me with open arms."

Director Coleman says it is all about being motivated to better your own future.

"All you have to do is go to school, get your GED, enroll in college and as soon as you get a number of hours – two, three hours of college – you've already trumped the GED," he says

In the past two decades, the program has graduated nearly a thousand individuals. The program has an eighty percent success rate.
