Senior Games kick off in Greenville

Posted: Updated:
GREENVILLE, N.C. -
Baby boomers from all over North Carolina-- are the stars of the show this weekend, competing in the Senior Games.

Teams from all over the state are in Greenville-- competing in the state finals of the games. You have to be over the age of 50 to compete in the 3-3 basketball competition.

The General Assembly launched the program in the 80's and Friday's competition came full circle for Congressman Bob Etheridge. "We've now finally recognized that physical activity and physical recreation is a lifetime and for a lot of these folks. They may have started as high school athletes, some as college athletes and so waited till later years."

The players on the team practice and play all year round in their communities. Just to get to this point-- the teams have to beat out other teams in their division.

Organizers of the event say the Senior Games help promote a healthy lifestyle. "If you have a spark that lights a fire, that leads to better health promotion that's what we want." President Brad Allen said.

The games will continue through Saturday afternoon at the East Carolina University Rec Center.
