The Directorate of Public Works is conducting a controlled and prescribed burn at Fort Benning today.

The prescribed area is within the central part of the post, officials say. Winds are predicted from the north and will keep smoke away from sensitive areas.

Areas are being burned for site preparation for upcoming tree planting. Areas are small and expected to burn out quickly. Prescribed burning helps prevent the occurrence of wildfires that can result from some military training activities. Firebreaks around impact areas are maintained annually to contain any wildfires that may be triggered by munitions.
