Social Security overpaying disability recipients

The Social Security Administration is overpaying big sums of money to disability beneficiaries.

And lawyers, consumer advocates and watchdogs say the agency's own missteps are to blame.

Some disability recipients continue to get payments for months or even years after notifying the agency they're working again or earn too much to qualify.

The Government Accountability Office oversees the Social Security Administration.

It says budget constraints and large backlogs of disability applications have delayed the reviews of income information that alert the agency to remove beneficiaries.

As a result, a recent GAO audit found the administration made one-point-three billion dollars in overpayments in just two years.
