Muscogee County reports record number of prescription drugs collected

Posted: Updated:

In the wake of National Prescription Drug Take Back Day, Muscogee County is reporting the largest number of drugs collected in the initiative's history.

Sheriff John Darr says this year his office has accumulated over 1500 pounds of prescription and over-the-counter drugs. The program helps keep the medicine out of the water system and off the streets.

He adds that each day more than 2000 teens begin to abuse prescription drugs. 12- to 17-year-olds abuse prescription drugs more than ecstasy, heroin, crack cocaine and methamphetamines combined, which is why it's important to participate in the program.

You can drop off your prescription drugs at the sheriff's office all year or at many local pharmacies. Keep Columbus Beautiful and Columbus Water Works are also partners of the initiative.
