Fayetteville teacher charged with hitting a student

Posted: Updated:

An elementary school teacher in Cumberland County is accused of slapping a student's face.

The Cumberland County Sheriff's Office served Tammy Moore, 35, with a misdemeanor criminal summons on Thursday morning. Moore is a second grade teacher at Brentwood Elementary School in Fayetteville.

She is charged with misdemeanor assault on a child under 12. The summons means she will have to appear in front of a judge on January 10.

Moore, who started with Cumberland County Schools on Aug. 19, has been suspended with pay.

Authorities began an investigation on Oct. 11 after the student told his family that Moore had hit him. Detectives say the student had been disruptive in class and was distracting other students.

Moore says she tapped the child on the left side of his cheek to get his attention so he would sit down and be quiet.
