PERRY, GA – The first day of November marks the start of Georgia Pecan Month, as designated by Georgia Governor Nathan Deal.
Since the early 1800's, Georgia has led the nation in producing this crunchy, buttery nut. November is the peak of harvest, which yields approximately 88 million pounds in an average season – enough to make 176 million pecan pies. Despite record rainfall this summer, the quality of this year's crop is expected to be excellent, although yields may be slightly lower than average.
Not only are Georgia Pecans delicious, they also pack a nutritional punch. Research shows that eating a handful of pecans a day as part of a heart-healthy diet may reduce the risk of heart disease. The American Heart Association (AHA) has also added Georgia Pecans to its list of certified heart-healthy foods, designated with the Heart-Check mark.
