Kendrick named WRBL Athletes of the Week

Posted: Updated:

Forgive the Kendrick Cherokees if they're walking the halls with a little extra swagger this week.

They're coming off one of the biggest wins in school history, a 20-14 win over Manchester in overtime that keeps the Cherokees' hopes of a playoff berth alive.

"People never thought we were going to win that game, but it was the biggest game we won all year," said junior tight end/linebacker Anthony McGruder. "We're just trying to keep that going and keep on winning."

After snapping a long playoff drought in 2012, Kendrick appears to be turning a corner permanently.

"To come out with a win there is fantastic for the kids," said head coach Jerry Dukes. "I just love it for our school, our community and for (principal) Dr. (Alonzo) James, because that's one of the things he's talked about: bringing Kendrick back to greatness."

The Cherokees have two remaining 5-AA games: Jordan and the surprising Spencer Greenwave.
