COLUMBUS, Ga. -

Students in first grade teacher Amelia Hall's class at Brewer Elementary dressed up like book characters and received a book as a treat this Halloween.

"Many of my students have no books at home," says Hall, who uses DonorsChoose.org to get free school supplies that might not be included in her school budget. She says teaching at a Title 1 school means quite a few of her students come from low-income families. "Students will read more with books at home. Books will be a gift students can open over and over again."

Horace Mann agent David Moore contributed to Hall's project and has also assisted the school in showing teachers how to post to DonorsChoose.org.

"The partnership with DonorsChoose.org has been a great way to help teachers get what they need to reach students in the classroom," says Moore.  "Teachers are able to get supplies they wouldn't be able to otherwise.  It's very rewarding to see the teachers get a project funded and use the supplies in the classroom."

Horace Mann and DonorsChoose.org started a partnership in 2011. In the past year, nearly 1,600 projects at a total $903,000 have been funded in Georgia schools served by Horace Mann agents.
