IRS warning about new phone scam

Posted: Updated:

The IRS  has issued a warning about a new phone scam that's happening all over the country.

They say impostors claiming to be IRS agents are calling people demanding they pay taxes they don't owe.

On these bogus calls innocent taxpayers, often immigrants, are told that they must pay up by loading money onto a prepaid card or sending a wire transfer.

If they argue, the scammers threaten to arrest or deport them or suspend their business or drivers' license.

The IRS says one of the reasons people fall for this scam is that the fraudsters make sure the IRS' toll free number shows up on a caller ID.

They also may know the potential victim's social security number.

An IRS commissioner says if you get a threat like this over the phone it is a sign that you are likely being scammed.
