Volunteers Work To Clean City Park

MOBILE, Alabama -

Saturday was a day of service, reclaiming parts of Dauphin Island Parkway that were in need of attention. One of those places was Parkway Senior Center.

"We are coming here to serve the community because this area was a mess. When we came here we could hardly walk by. There were shrubs everywhere, stones everywhere and the grass was overgrown," said Mahesh Batavia who volunteered.

No matter the age, volunteers showed up for one purpose.

"We look forward to making this a senior citizen area that all of the citizens of Mobile can come and walk and have a good time in a safe environment," Elige Jones with Mobile Community Action.

"When people see people working and they're having fun and joining each other then it encourages them to do the same thing in their community or their neighborhood, so it's just setting the tone to come together and do more than we've been doing," said mayor-elect Sandy Stimpson.

Stimpson will officially be named mayor on Monday during a formal ceremony at Government Plaza. His official day on the job will be Tuesday, November 2.
