Morehead City officer fired after shooting

Posted: Updated:
MOREHEAD CITY, N.C. -

A Morehead City police officer has been fired after being accused of accidentally shooting another officer during training last month.

Police Chief Wrenn Johnson said Monday that Marvin Willis III is no longer with the department.

City Manager David Whitlow said Willis was fired last week after the department's internal investigation found that he had been dishonest.

Investigators said Willis shot officer Garrett Hardin in the chest Oct. 2 while they were training in the parking lot outside the police department. Hardin was hospitalized at Vidant Medical Center in Greenville for a week before being released to recover at home.

The State Bureau of Investigation has also looked into the shooting.

District Attorney Scott Thomas is to review the SBI report and decide whether charges will be filed.
