Smarter Living: Managing holiday stress

Posted: Updated:

The holiday season can be an exciting time, but it can also be downright stressful. In this edition of "Smarter Living" we find ways to help you manage holiday stress so you and yours can stay happy and healthy.

"We all love to do all the fun activities so it's tempting to say yes to everything, but don't overschedule," says psychiatrist Kristen Wynns.

Wynns says to choose events as a family and focus on downtime.

"Those moments when you're watching your kids quietly play on the floor, you've got the Christmas tree and the carols, those moments are just as important and the crazy go, go, go," she says.

It's also important to stick to your routine and not let the holiday craziness shake things up too much.

"We all know bedtimes are going to get pushed later, meals are going to get out of wack, but especially for kids, it's nice if you can stick to a semblance of a routine," Wynns says.

Routines give a sense of calm and predictability.

For more holiday stress tips and info, tune in to WNCN Today Thursday morning for Sharon Tazewell's full "Smarter Living" piece or check this page after the show to watch the video.
