APEX, N.C. -

Authorities in Apex have charged one man with a lengthy list of crimes after he drove his Ford pickup through a house early Wednesday morning.

The incident happened at approximately 2:50 a.m. on White Dogwood Road off Olive Chapel Road.

Investigators said the vehicle clipped one house before crashing through a second house. The truck also hit a gas line, but no one was injured.

Everyone in the immediate area had to leave their homes because of a gas leak, but crews were able to shut off the gas.

William Tyler Mayhew, 22, was charged with DWI, speeding, careless and reckless driving and hit and run among other charges.

Witnesses said the crash sounded like a loud explosion.

"I was asleep in my bed, and all of a sudden I heard this big explosion. I tried to go back to sleep, but then I heard people outside. I look out my window, and I saw flashlights, and then I heard my mom coming up the stairs, and she was yelling 'something's wrong', so we all got dressed and came outside," says Lori Bureen, who lives a couple houses down from the wreck.

"Since it happened in the middle of the night, we were all tired. It almost felt like you were in a movie. Everyone asking what was going on, crying. Wondering how someone could do something like this, " says Bureen.
