Mayor Stimpson Removes Door to Office Suite

Posted: Updated:

MOBILE, Ala. - With a power drill in hand, the door to the mayor's suite comes off its hinges. "On the campaign, one of the main things that we talked about was transparency. And also the city council was complaining all the time about access to the mayor's office. And also this is just a effort to show them that we are going to be different than the past administrations that we are going to have an open door policy, not just to the council, but to the public," said Mayor Sandy Stimpson.

So what does removing the door really mean? We all get to the mayor's office the same way. First we enter Government Plaza, and then we have to go through security, then up the elevator. Once you are on the 10th floor, you are in the lobby and then you have to sign in. But then there are two wooden doors. I'm told the mayor wants to change it to glass, but has to get approval from the county to remove them. And after the wooden doors, you have two bullet proof glass doors, which used to be closed. The mayor says now they will remain open.

"I thinks it's great. I think the mayor is trying to show that he's trying to change the ways Mobile is being run," said Jeff Brookins.

"I think it's a good thought. however I don't think it would be applicable to most people because we won't have freedom to the floor where he is located," said Cornelius Edwards.

"If it gives a chance for people to actually access him, or find someway to actually get concerns to someone in the mayor's office easier that's great, but I'm not a big fan of symbols. I'm not an action person," said Burton Rabby.

Seeing results is what Mayor Stimpson says he's all about.

"I would just challenge the citizens of Mobile to think about the doors that you've got in your life and think about taking some of them down because if we are going to be one mobile that's going to be necessary."

Mayor Stimpson also took down curtains covering the glass doors to the conference room.
