14 families celebrate home ownership with Habitat for Humanity

Posted: Updated:

14 families are celebrating home ownership after paying off their mortgages.

At Wednesday's Mortgage Burning ceremony, Habitat for Humanity of Columbus honored the partner families that have paid for their homes within the past three years. All the families' mortgage papers were tossed into a fire.

Habitat's program sets up a 20-year plan for partner families when their homes are built, but all of the new homeowners paid for the houses in less than 15.

Shirley Coleman's home was built in 1995. She says, "All of my life I wanted to own a home, and then Habitat gave me the opportunity to own a home, and now that it's paid for and it's mine with the help of the Lord, I'm just ecstatic about it."

Columbus Habitat also dedicated its 278th house today. It's the fourth Energy Star-certified home the organization has built.
