BREVARD, N.C. -

A Brevard man has been arrested and charged with killing a woman 17 years ago.

Michael Owen, 63, a self-employed painter from Pisgah Forest, was arrested Wednesday and charged with first-degree murder in the death of 76-year-old Edna Eloise Glaze.

Transylvania County Sheriff David Mahony says his department never gave up on the case. Mahoney says investigators met with District Attorney Greg Newman, who agreed to present the case to a grand jury.

"We've never stopped working on this case," Mahony said. "We've continued to keep an eye on it."

He would not talk about evidence in the case.

Glaze disappeared in 1996, sparking a massive search near the Brevard Music Center using helicopters, dog teams and more than 200 volunteers and trained searchers.

Glaze, an Alzheimer's patient, was last seen when a woman dropped her off near the music center auditorium. Her body was not found.
