Car overturns into Greenville canal; driver cited for texting

GREENVILLE, N.C. -

An ECU student has been cited for texting and driving after her car overturned in a canal in Greenville.

It happened shortly after 9 a.m. near the intersection of Stantonsburg Rd. and Westpointe Drive. 

The driver, Carmen Freeman, a 2nd year ECU student, says she climbed out through the rear-door window of her Nissan Sentra. Freeman tells us she over-corrected and veered off into the canal. Troopers say she admitted she was texting and driving.

The Red Oak Fire Department and State Highway Patrol responded to the scene. The driver was not hurt.
