Portion of UNC dorm to remain closed due to fire damage

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. -

The majority of students will be able to return to their dorms, but more the 75 will have to be reassigned after a fire damaged the fourth floor of a UNC residence hall.

A fire ignited Tuesday in Cobb Residence Hall on UNC's campus, forcing its 380 residents to be reassigned to other student housing. The university said the majority of students will be able to return to their dorms when inspectors give the OK, but the fourth floor of the building will remain closed through the spring.

The university said this will affect 76 students, who will be reassigned to other housing.

Responding emergency crews smelled smoke and traced the fire to the attic's insulation and structure in the northwest end of the building, however neither the cause of the fire nor the extent of the damage have been determined.

A restoration company is working to remove damage, debris and clear the smoke smell, as well as bag, tag and clean belongings in the six rooms most affected by the fire. Eleven residents live in those six rooms.

No one was injured in the blaze.

Cobb, a large dorm on the main part of campus, was built in 1952 and renovated in 2005.
