FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. -

In a statement released Friday, Val Applewhite said she was offering her concession in the Fayetteville mayoral race.

Based on unofficial results, Nat Robertson defeated Applewhite to be the next mayor of Fayetteville Tuesday night. Robertson will be the first new mayor for the All-American city in eight years.

As recently as Wednesday, Applewhite said she would wait until official numbers came in before moving forward.

The margin of victory was 270 votes. Robertson won with 11,571 votes (50.52 percent) to Applewhite's 11,301 (49.34 percent). There were 34 write-in votes (0.15 percent).

"I entered this race because I wanted to be the voice for all residents of Fayetteville. My campaign stood for the issues worth fighting for," Applewhite said. "The way to continue our fight is to advocate for issues that make our community stronger."

Applewhite has served on the City Council for the last six years.
