Third Muscogee County Jail inmate dies

Posted: Updated:
COLUMBUS, Ga. -

A Muscogee County jail inmate has been charged with murder after a deadly overnight fight with his cell mate. This is the 3rd inmate death at the Muscogee County jail within the last 2 weeks.

Muscogee County Sheriff John Darr said his office is adding this homicide investigation onto the pile that has stacked up over the past 2 weeks. He said the other investigations are close to being complete.

It started out as a normal Friday night at the Muscogee County jail. Deputies did the routine lock down and check on inmates, but right after midnight the Muscogee County Coroner got a call to come to the facility. A 57 year old inmate was unresponsive, extremely bloody and with lacerations on his face and head.

Authorities say it appears Jeffery McKinney and the victim, Isaac Kindred got into an altercation. Kindred was pronounced dead just before 12:30 am. Muscogee County Sheriff John Darr said the case is still under investigation and could not confirm a specific timeline of events but said in general, employees respond promptly to any situation brought to their attention.

"I have not seen anything in these investigations that point to the employees of the Muscogee County Sheriff's office being responsible. We have been very responsible every time, we've rendered first aid," said Sheriff Darr.

This death comes about 2 weeks after another inmate, Lori Carroll was found dead in her cell. The 46 year old had self inflicted wounds to her face, punctured lungs and broken ribs, but a cause of death has not been released yet.

Six days later, a man jailed several charges including burglary also died from a brain aneurysm. Darr said the 21 year old, Maurice Grier, notified staff that he wasn't feeling well, so deputies took him to the jail clinic and later the hospital. Darr said there's been no indication Grier was involved in a fight beforehand and the investigation is almost complete. Darr said it is unusual to have 3 deaths in almost 2 weeks, but Carroll's death was the first at the jail in 2 years.

"We have always stayed well below the national average when it comes to inmate deaths," said Darr.
