Three young people were killed and two more were critically injured in a car crash early Sunday in Harnett County.
The State Highway Patrol says all five were riding in a car that crashed off Neills Creek Road between Campbell University and Lillington around 2:30 a.m.
The highway patrol says the vehicle struck a tree and burst into flames after impact. Four of the occupants were able to be removed from the burning vehicle; however the fifth passenger could not be removed immediately.
Autumn Ashlyn Zimmer and Marina Troyano, both 17 and of Fuquay-Varina, were transferred to WakeMed and are in critical condition.
The driver of the vehicle, 23-year-old Shane Mitchell Garner, of Coats, as well as 20-year-old Austin Stewart Ferrell, of Buies Creek, and 16-year-old Casey Dell Edens, of Lillington, died as a result of the crash.
Highway Patrol said the Lillington Police Department was conducting a license check on U.S. Highway 421 near Campbell University when Garner sped through the checkpoint without stopping. He crashed soon after.
Investigators suspect alcohol to be a factor in the crash.
