Suspect running from police leads them to stolen items

Posted: Updated:
OPELIKA, Ala. -

A suspect running from police in Opelika seemingly lead police directly to the place where stolen items were being kept.

Two men were attempting to break in to a home in the 400 block of Westwood Street when the homeowner called the police, says Opelika police Captain Bruce DeLong. The suspect fled in a Sports Utility Vehicle.

A short time later, officers spotted two black males fitting the description of the suspects exiting the vehicle. One suspect was taken in to custody while the second fled towards the 300 block of Pleasant Circle.

Responding officers obtained search warrants and searched the apartment the subject was suspected of hiding in. Inside the apartment, police found the individual and "a large amount of property believed to have been stolen in numerous burglaries," DeLong says in a news release.

Both suspects, whose names have not yet been released, are being questioned by investigators. Officials are contacting victims from recent burglaries in an attempt to identify if any of their stolen property was recovered.
