Cool School: Beauregard High School

OPELIKA, Ala. -

AP Chemistry, it's one of those classes students take to prepare themselves for college sciences courses. At an Opelika High School students get a hands on experience to bring the lessons to life. This week's Cool School is Beauregard High School.

It looks like these students are playing with slime, but as the AP Chemistry class throws out words like sodium borate and gaur gam, you realize it's much more than afternoon playtime. Students spend time in the classroom, then head over to the lab to get hands on application of their textbook material. Students tell me this is the first time they've done an experiment like this, but enjoyed the slippery creation.

"Once it cooled down it became like a jelly substance and we got to pour it on the table and it was really cool because it looked like slime. It was really gross but it was really cool too," said Kaitlyn Mullis a senior at Beauregard High School.

"It made a weird semi-solid and we got to play with it, make observations and test it for different things like viscosity and stretchiness," said David Mioss a junior at Beauregard High School.

And AP Chemistry teacher said most of their experiments are traditional but this one was a bit different.

"They can actually put a conceptual thought into something they've never experienced in order to look at the physical structures of the slime," said Amanda Yeager.

And while the coursework can be challenging, the small family environment makes teachers and students thoroughly enjoy the Beauregard High School experience.

"I just love how everyone knows each other an it's just a big family. I love how small it is. I love small schools and being able to live in a small county like this. I love this school it's awesome," said Kaitlyn Mullis.
