DURHAM, N.C. -

While most of us are cranking up our heat in this cold weather, some people are just looking for warm place to stay.

The Durham Rescue Mission opened its new dorm for men today, which includes 40 beds.

The area used to be dorms, but the Mission closed it when the new 88-bed Center for Hope facility opened earlier this year.

The mission did not plan to turn the space back into dorms; but when the Center for Hope quickly filled up, it was clear more beds were needed.

"Last night we had 21 people sleeping on the concrete floor," said Rev Ernie Mills, with the Durham Rescue Mission. "Now, tonight, those same 21 will be sleeping on these 40 beds. So, the beds are already half full."

Ronald McNeil said he was pleased to have a warm place to sleep Tuesday night, but tonight he's excited to be "sleeping on a bed of pillows."

Employees from the RDU Airport Authority raised more than $2,000 through a bike ride last month. They donated the money to Mission, which used it to buy beds for the new dorm.

Men from the Mission started work on the space earlier this fall.
