I-26 W In Polk Co. Open After Truck Carrying Cows Overturns

POLK COUNTY, N.C. - An overturned cattle truck on Interstate 26 in Polk County prompted officials to close the road Wednesday for several hours.

The North Carolina Department of Transportation says it happened in the westbound lanes near mile marker 63, which is at the top of the Saluda Grade.

Rescue crews worked to transfer the 77 cows to another truck.  Veterinarians were also called to the scene.

Dr. Rachel Butterworth with Rutherford County Large Animal Services says 65 of the cows survived.

The driver of the truck tells the Hendersonville-Times-News that he over-corrected, causing the truck to overturn.  He was taken to the hospital for his injuries.

The Interstate was opened to traffic around 5:20 p.m.
