Georgia DDS now offers online license reinstatement

Posted: Updated:
COLUMBUS, Ga. -

Some good news for those trying to reinstate their driver's license in Georgia. Customers will now be able to do it online. The new online service streamlines the process. Drivers will be able to check requirements, court documents, and also pay fees in order to reinstate their license. This new process benefits everyone who goes to a local office.

It's a feeling most people dread. Waiting in long lines at the Department of Driver's Services to get a new license or renew an old one. Well some drivers can breathe a bit easier now that one more service is moving to the Internet.

Susan Sports at the Department of Driver's Services said many drivers will come into the local offices just to find out what they need to reinstate their license but they won't have to do that anymore.

"So now it's a customer service convenience. They can go online , find out the information, also pay fees and when they're eligible they can automatically reinstate online," said Sports.

Before heading online there are a couple of things customers need to access the reinstatement service. You must know your Georgia driver license number and also have or create a Department of Driver's Services online account. Sports said the new service will also benefit other customers at the DDS.

"We do several hundred thousand reinstatements each year at DDS centers. If a portion of those customers can go online to take care of their business, they the wait times will be better for everyone else who has to renew a license who absolutely must come in to a drivers license center," said Sports.

There are several services already offered online like changing your address or replacing a lost license. You can visit dds.ga.gov for more information on the new online service.

The Columbus Department of Drivers Services will also have a new feature this Friday. They're opening a birth certificate office annex in partnership with the Columbus Health Department. Drivers will no longer have to make an additional trip if they leave this document at home.
