Red Devil trio signs NLIs

PHENIX CITY, Ala. -

Three Central Red Devil standout athletes signed college National Letters of Intent on Wednesday, the first day of the NCAA's early signing period.

Jimecheia Banks signed to play basketball at Winthrop University in Rock Hill, S.C. Winthrop is a Division I school and a member of the Big Sky conference.

Banks averaged 9.1 points and 3.5 steals per game as a junior.

On the diamond, Blake Johnson signed to play middle infield at Alabama-Birmingham. He says the Blazers were the team he wanted to be a part of, and now that it's official, he can relax.

"It's a lot easier," Johnson said. "I'll start focusing on the team, instead of worrying about what I'm going to do after high school. I can start worrying about what our team is going to do this upcoming season."

Johnson's self-described best friend on the team, Jamal Howard, will also be headed to a college diamond. He'll play in Tuscaloosa for Mitch Gaspard and the Crimson Tide at the University of Alabama.

"I visited the campus and met with the coaches," he said. "I met with the players. I know a lot of guys down there, so once I set foot on campus, it felt like home."
