Update: Man dies after Columbus police-involved shooting

COLUMBUS, Ga. -

The 27-year-old hospitalized for multiple gunshot wounds after a Columbus police-involved shooting Wednesday night has succumbed to his injuries, WRBL News 3 has learned. Willie Williams was being treated for his injuries at the Medical Center after refusing police orders to drop his weapon, according to police.

On Wednesday, Columbus police responded to a call to the 100 block of Ticknor Drive concerning at attempted armed robbery of an individual. Police approached two subjects in the area of Ft. Benning Road and Shelby Street that fit the description of possible suspects in the attempted robbery. A news release from the Columbus Police Department says the officers approached the subjects, one of them, Williams, had a BB gun. Police say Williams is accussed of raising his weapon and the officer fired his weapon striking the subject multiple times.

The other subject told police he was the victim and was being robbed as police arrived.

No officers or witnesses were injured by Williams.

One officer was placed on Administrative Leave with pay while the incident is being investigated.

The G.B.I. and the Columbus Police Department are conducting a duel investigation of the incident.
