Lanett Panthers latest WRBL Athletes of the Week

Posted: Updated:
LANETT, Ala. -

The Lanett Panthers have quietly been one of the most dominant teams in the state of Alabama this season, and after a first-round playoff win, they are the latest WRBL Athletes of the Week.

They haven't lost all year, and have rocketed up the no. 2 ranking in Alabama's 2A.

Lanett knocked off Gaston, 66-34, thanks in large part to running back Marlon Bridges, Jr., who ran for more than 300 yards and six touchdowns.

Now, the attention turns to Fultondale, and revenge. The Wildcats ended Lanett's season in 2012, beating them by a single point.

"We have a bitter taste in our mouths because Fultondale beat us last year, 14-13, right there on the goal line," said senior quarterback Mandell Ray. "We're really coming out for revenge this week so we're going to give it all we got."

The focus has been on Fultondale since the minute the win over Gaston ended.

"We're going to make sure we take every step that we need to win this game this year," said senior lineman Quintavious Rea.

Not that it will be easy.

"Fultondale is an extremely good football team," said head coach Clifford Story, Jr. "They have a 10-1 record. They played in a real tough region. They're very athletic; they're big across the front. This may be a team that we play this year that's bigger than we are."

An overflow crowd is expected for the Sweet 16 matchup Friday night at Morgan Washburn Stadium on the campus of Lanett High School.

"The community's excited," Story said. "We're doing something we haven't done since 2007, which is an undefeated season. Everybody's excited. They're ready for some football."

Kickoff is scheduled for 8:00 p.m. ET/7:00 p.m. CT. Catch highlights on the PrepZone.
