4 arrested in Savannah attempted bank robbery

Posted: Updated:

Four suspects are in custody in connection with an attempted armed robbery Wednesday at a Midway bank.

Just after 8:30, employees of the Interstate Federal Credit Union on East Oglethorpe Highway reported that two armed men tried to enter the bank through a back door, but were unsuccessful after the doors were quickly locked. Surveillance photos captured the would be robbers as they ran into a wooden area nearby.

Investigators say K-9 units later tracked the subject's trail through the wooden area. Further investigation revealed that the two would be robbers and a third individual had been picked up at the edge of the wooden area in a black Chevrolet Sports Utility Vehicle.

Liberty County deputies later spotted a vehicle about matching that description a mile south, parked off of Cay Creek Road, and attempted to approach it. After a brief chase, the driver pulled over at a gas station on East Oglethorpe Highway and all four suspects surrendered.

Twenty-four year-old  Kendall Steven, 30-year-old Demetrious Hall, 31-year-old Randy Jones, and 32-year-old Durrell Jones were arrested and booked at the Liberty County Jail, pending formal charges.

Investigators point out that Wednesday's attempted bank robbery took place just as hundreds of students were being evacuated from Midway Middle School after deputies found fake bomb in a car.  While, investigators haven't confirmed the two incidents are related, they haven't ruled out the possibility.

Liberty County Investigators along with other agencies continue to investigate both crimes.
