Cheer Competition brings $1.2 million to Columbus

Posted: Updated:

Thousands of people from all over Georgia came to Columbus this weekend for the Georgia High School Association cheerleading finals. Organizers said the competition will bring more than 1 million dollars into the city.

3 thousand cheerleaders, all with parents, coaches, siblings and friends. It's this group that filled the Columbus Civic Center Friday and Saturday for a weekend filled with cheerleading competitions. But for the city of Columbus it brings much more than just bubbly contestants. With thousands flooding the city for the 2 day event, businesses across the area will see an increase.

"We generally go out to a couple places here in the area. The moms generally go out for a moms dinner which we're here which they have a great time there. And then of course our team always stays here overnight which is a great time and before we head home we'll definitely hit it up for dinner 1 more time," said cheer dad Scott McLaren.

David Boyd at the Columbus Sports Council said the event will bring in around 1.2 million dollars for the community.

"Yes, the restaurants you have to wait a little bit but what's that mean? It means jobs to our community. It means our neighbors are working and at the end of the day it makes Columbus a better place," said David Boyd.

The Georgia High School Association has hosted the cheer finals in Columbus for the past 11 years, and floor manager Tiffany Walker, a Columbus native, is proud to share her city with the 48 competing teams.

"It's just a city to experience for all the athletes and their coaches and fans," said Walker.

The next big event for the sports council will be all star football game for the Georgia Athletic Coaches Association. Teams from all over the state will come for that event in December.
