No charges for NC deputy chief medical examiner

Posted: Updated:

Prosecutors are not bringing criminal charges against a top official at the N.C. Medical Examiner's Office.

Orange County District Attorney Jim Woodall said Friday that he made that decision after reviewing a State Bureau of Investigation inquiry.

Officials confirmed earlier this month that the SBI was looking into allegations involving former deputy North Carolina medical examiner Dr. Clay Nichols's alleged mishandling of bullet fragments in two Cumberland County cases.

Nichols was fired after the allegations came to light. He told the Charlotte Observer that he did nothing wrong. He says he wants his job back and an apology.

Woodall said investigators found no criminal activity or wrongdoing. But he said the case has raised questions about the office's performance.
