CSU Accounting Team Makes National Semifinals

COLUMBUS, Ga. -- A four-student team representing Columbus State University's Turner College of Business has been selected as one of 15 semifinalists in a national competition staged by the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants.

 Now, team members are asking the public to view CSU's six-minute video presentation at www.thiswaytocpa.com/2013 and, if they like what they see, cast an online vote for the CSU team by noon Wednesday, Nov. 20. Beyond the "popular vote," semifinalist plans will also be judged by a panel of experts.

"The competition has been a great experience but has also involved a great deal of time and effort," said team captain Pavla Melkova, a senior accounting and management information systems double major. "We were so thrilled when we found out we made the semifinals. Please vote and show your support for our school's team. There are teams from much larger universities, and we need your vote."

Other members of the Columbus State team making the semifinals in the fourth annual AICPA national competition are Chelsea Whitehurst and Kimberly Bradley, both accounting and finance double majors, and Christopher Graham, a general business and management information systems double major. Carol Bishop, an assistant professor in CSU's Department of Accounting and Finance, serves as team advisor.

All teams that entered the national competition were presented with a scenario involving a 24-year-old computer science graduate who wants to "get a grip on his finances and pursue his dream of building a music-based mobile app." The 2013 AICPA competition gives students a shot at advising the fictional graduate through crucial life decisions and, if they're on one of three finalist teams, presenting their financial plans in Washington, D.C. There, finalist teams will compete for a top award of $10,000, with second and third prizes of $5,000 and $2,500, respectively.

Voters in the online competition will be asked to provide their name and email address, following up in response to a confirmation email.
