OPELIKA, Ala. -

UPDATE: Simmons turned himself in at the Lee County Detention Center Wednesday at 12:15 p.m without incident. He is currently in custody there.

Lee County law enforcement are looking for a 29-year-old Smiths Station man who walked away from his prison work detail Monday morning.

Allen Paul Simmons was working at the Opelika Police Department  when he "walked away from his detail," Opelika Police Department Captain Bruce DeLong says in a news release.

Both the Opelika Police Department and Lee County Sheriff's Office are investigating. Simmons is an inmate with the Lee County Detention Center.
