Sheriff impersonator robs, kills man in Lee Co.

SANFORD, N.C. -

Authorities are attempting to identify a man who may have information about the murder of a  Sanford man Friday morning. Law enforcement said the suspect who broke into the victim's house and identified himself as the sheriff.

The Lee County Sheriff's Office said the person in the photo is not a suspect. The image was taken at the Save More Convenience Store located at 2800 South Horner Blvd. in Sanford at 6:30 a.m.

Authorities said a 911 call was made from 69 Hickory Nut Court in reference to a shooting.

Upon arrival, deputies found Wayne Giles, 45, suffering from a gunshot wound. EMS pronounced Giles dead on the scene, authorities said.

Giles' wife told investigators a black male broke into the residence around 5:45 a.m., announcing himself as "Sheriff." Giles' wife said the suspect was carrying an assault rifle type weapon and demanded money. She said she gave the suspect money and was then tied up, authorities said.

The wife said the suspect was wearing a black toboggan, dreadlocks pulled in a ponytail, a gray sweat shirt with "Sheriff Dept." printed on it and tan cargo pants.
