COLUMBUS, Ga. -

Blue Cross & Blue Shield insurance analyst Kenneth Walker was shot and killed December 10, 2003 during a suspected drug stop on I-185 between the Manchester Expressway and Macon Road exits. Muscogee County sheriff's deputies pulled over an SUV with four men inside. The official word from the Muscogee County Sheriff's Office was that they were following the Miami Boys, armed drug dealers from Florida. Warren Beulah was driving the GMC Yukon.

"Before I can get my car in park and do, and turn it off, that's when they came to the door, snatched me out the door, gun in my face, one hand, left hand, gun here in my face, get down on the ground and by the time he slammed me to the ground, I heard the pop sound and then when I said what was going on, they said be quiet, be quiet," said Beulah. Anthony Smith and Daryl Ransom were also in the vehicle with Beulah and Walker. The men settled a suit on the claims of false arrest, illegal imprisonment and unreasonable search and seizure.

Former Muscogee County Deputy Sheriff David Glisson fired the fatal shot that struck Walker in the head. The weapon was a MP 9mm sub-machine gun. No drugs or weapons were found inside the vehicle.

The fatal shooting touched off a series of rallies, marches, and lawsuits. It also attracted national figures including Jesse Jackson, Al Sharpton, and Judge Greg Mathis. The issue polarized the community.

Then Sheriff Ralph Johnson said the Yukon was followed from an apartment complex that was under surveillance earlier. About two hours after the shooting incident, a search warrant was approved and served at the apartment in question. Approximately 3 grams of crack cocaine ($300.00) street value, 24 grams of powder cocaine ($2.400.00) in street value, and a Talon 9 mm handgun were recovered. Darrell Jackson and Thomas Randall were arrested inside the apartment and were charged by the Metro Narcotics Task Force with Possession of Cocaine w/Intent to Distribute, Possession of a Firearm by a Convicted Felon, and Jackson was further charged with Possession of a Firearm During the Commission of a Crime.

Tim Crumbley, a fraternity brother and friend of Walker's, started a string of group homes for boys, The Kenneth Walker Residential Homes for Boys. To learn more about the home and how you can donate, visit http://www.kbwhome.com/#!
